Tawaf — Circling the Ka'bah

Tawaf is the circling of the Ka'bah seven times, beginning and ending at the Black Stone, performed with wudu.

Performing the circuits

Face the Black Stone, say 'Bismillah, Allahu akbar' and begin. Keep the Ka'bah on your left and complete seven circuits.

Men uncover the right shoulder (idtiba) and walk briskly in the first three circuits (ramal) where the crowd allows.

After Tawaf

Cover the shoulder, pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim reciting Surah al-Kafirun and al-Ikhlas, then drink Zamzam.

Supplications

At each circuit

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Bismillah wa Allahu akbar

In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.

Said facing the Black Stone

Between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina 'adhab al-nar

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Sunan Abu Dawud 1892

Frequently Asked Questions

Must I have wudu for Tawaf?

The majority of scholars require purity for Tawaf, as it resembles prayer. Renew wudu if it breaks and resume.

Do I have to kiss the Black Stone?

No. If crowds prevent it, point towards it with your right hand and say the takbir. Do not harm others to reach it.
