Sahih Muslim 4999 — Book 34, Hadith 28

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْجَبَّارِ بْنُ الْعَلاَءِ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، قَالَ سَمِعَ عَمْرٌو، جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَنَحْنُ ثَلاَثُمِائَةِ رَاكِبٍ وَأَمِيرُنَا أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ نَرْصُدُ عِيرًا لِقُرَيْشٍ فَأَقَمْنَا بِالسَّاحِلِ نِصْفَ شَهْرٍ فَأَصَابَنَا جُوعٌ شَدِيدٌ حَتَّى أَكَلْنَا الْخَبَطَ فَسُمِّيَ جَيْشَ الْخَبَطِ فَأَلْقَى لَنَا الْبَحْرُ دَابَّةً يُقَالُ لَهَا الْعَنْبَرُ فَأَكَلْنَا مِنْهَا نِصْفَ شَهْرٍ وَادَّهَنَّا مِنْ وَدَكِهَا حَتَّى ثَابَتْ أَجْسَامُنَا - قَالَ - فَأَخَذَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ ضِلَعًا مِنْ أَضْلاَعِهِ فَنَصَبَهُ ثُمَّ نَظَرَ إِلَى أَطْوَلِ رَجُلٍ فِي الْجَيْشِ وَأَطْوَلِ جَمَلٍ فَحَمَلَهُ عَلَيْهِ فَمَرَّ تَحْتَهُ قَالَ وَجَلَسَ فِي حَجَاجِ عَيْنِهِ نَفَرٌ قَالَ وَأَخْرَجْنَا مِنْ وَقْبِ عَيْنِهِ كَذَا وَكَذَا قُلَّةَ وَدَكٍ - قَالَ - وَكَانَ مَعَنَا جِرَابٌ مِنْ تَمْرٍ فَكَانَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ يُعْطِي كُلَّ رَجُلٍ مِنَّا قَبْضَةً قَبْضَةً ثُمَّ أَعْطَانَا تَمْرَةً تَمْرَةً فَلَمَّا فَنِيَ وَجَدْنَا فَقْدَهُ ‏.‏

Traduction

Rapporté par Jabir ibn 'Abdullah رضي الله عنه : « Le Messager d’Allah ﷺ nous a envoyés en expédition. Nous étions trois cents cavaliers et notre chef était 'Ubaida ibn al-Jarrah. Nous guettions une caravane des Quraysh. Nous sommes restés sur la côte pendant quinze jours, souffrant tellement de la faim que nous avons dû manger des feuilles. C’est pour cela qu’on a appelé cette expédition “le Détachement des Feuilles”. L’océan a rejeté pour nous un animal appelé al-‘Anbar (une baleine). Nous en avons mangé pendant quinze jours et nous nous sommes enduits de sa graisse jusqu’à ce que nos corps deviennent plus forts. Abu 'Ubaida prit une de ses côtes, la dressa, puis fit passer le plus grand homme de l’armée et le plus grand chameau dessous : il est passé sans problème. Plusieurs hommes pouvaient s’asseoir dans la cavité de son œil, et nous avons extrait de nombreuses jarres de graisse de son œil. Avant de trouver la baleine, nous n’avions que de petits sacs de dattes. 'Ubaida donnait à chacun une poignée de dattes, puis, quand il n’en resta presque plus, il donna une datte par personne. Quand il n’y en eut plus du tout, nous avons ressenti leur manque. »
