The moment of Iftar is one of the most precious moments of a fasting person's day: a moment of joy, and a moment when supplication is answered.
Make your personal duas in the minutes before the adhan of Maghrib, because the fasting person's dua at the time of breaking the fast is not rejected.
The reported wording 'Dhahaba al-zama'u...' was said by the Prophet ﷺ after breaking the fast.
He would break his fast with fresh dates before praying; if there were none, with dried dates; and if none, he would sip water.
Hastening to break the fast at sunset is a sunnah and a sign of goodness in a community.
ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
Dhahaba al-zama'u wabtallat al-'urooqu wa thabata al-ajru in sha Allah
The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is certain, if Allah wills.
Sunan Abu Dawud 2357 — hasan
أَفْطَرَ عِنْدَكُمُ الصَّائِمُونَ وَأَكَلَ طَعَامَكُمُ الأَبْرَارُ وَصَلَّتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ
Aftara 'indakum al-sa'imoon, wa akala ta'amakum al-abrar, wa sallat 'alaykum al-mala'ikah
May those who are fasting break their fast with you, may the righteous eat your food, and may the angels send blessings upon you.
Sunan Abu Dawud 3854
That wording is reported with a weak chain. Scholars permit saying it, but the stronger and preferred wording is 'Dhahaba al-zama'u wabtallat al-'urooq...'.
Make your personal supplications just before breaking the fast, then say Bismillah when you eat, and the reported Iftar dua after.
Break the fast lightly with dates and water, pray Maghrib in its time, and then complete the meal.
